SSL Certificate

What is SSL?

SSL Certificate Creates a Secure Connection & Establish Trust

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer and it is a cryptographic protocol used to secure communication over the insecure infrastructure. SSL is widely used to safeguard any sensitive information (such as username, password, credit card details etc.) being sent over the computer networks. SSL does it by encrypting sensitive information as it passed from one computer network to other.

SSL is largely used to achieve the following:

  • Encrypting Sensitive Information
  • Authentication
  • Meeting PCI (Payment Card Industry) Compliance
  • Better Search Engine Ranking

What are the different types of SSL

SSL can be differentiated on the basis of following:

Validation Level Number of secured domains/subdomains
  1. Domain Validation (DV) Certificates
  2. Organization Validation (OV) Certificates
  3. Extended Validation (EV) Certificates
  1. Single Domain
  2. Wildcard

Validation Level

Domain Validation (DV) Certificate

Domain Validation (DV) Certificate has the lowest level of validation and is more suitable for blogs, personal sites and non-business sites. Domain Validation SSL certificate is issued within minutes as only ownership of the registered domain needs to be ascertained.

Domain Validation Certificate

Features of DV Certificate

  • Up to 256 bit encryption
  • Suitable for blog, non-business sites and personal sites
  • Browser secure padlock and HTTPS trust indicator

Organization Validation (OV) Certificate

Organization Validation (OV) Certificate has medium level of validation and is more suitable for small business and organizations. Along with ascertaining the registered domain, the Certifying Authority also require documents to check for legitimacy of organization.

Organization Validation Certificate

Features of OV Certificate

  • Up to 256 bit encryption
  • Suitable for small business and organization
  • Browser secure padlock and HTTPS trust indicator

Extended Validation (EV) Certificate

Extended Validation Certificate is also known as green bar SSL and has the highest level of validation. EV certificate guard against phishing attack and other cyber-attack. Issuance of certificate is more stringent and Certifying Authority checks for the organization information including legal existence, physical location etc.

Extended Validation Certificate

Features of EV Certificate

  • Suitable for e-commerce sites
  • Green Address Bar and Organization Name
  • Complete Business Validation
  • RSA and DSA encryption algorithm supported

On the basis of number of secured domain and subdomain

  1. Single Domain SSL – While selecting Domain Validation, Extended Validation or Organization Validation user can use Single Domain or Regular SSL to protect single domain name ( For example, https://www.abc.com). However subdomain such as https://careers.abc.com is not supported.

  2. Wildcard SSL – Unlike Single domain SSL, a wildcard SSL protect any number of subdomain of a website. For example, https://www.abc.com, https://blog.abc.com, https://email.abc.com
